Step by Step
How to Prepare Your Case
Follow these five steps to build a solid foundation before you ever set foot in a courtroom.
Assess Your Case
Determine what type of case you have, which court has jurisdiction, and what outcome you are seeking before you file anything.
Gather Your Evidence
Collect documents, correspondence, photos, and witness information that support your position. Organize everything chronologically.
Understand the Rules
Read the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure and the local rules for your specific court. Judges expect pro se litigants to follow the same rules as attorneys.
File & Serve Correctly
Submit your documents to the correct clerk's office, pay any required fees, and properly serve all opposing parties according to the rules.
Prepare for Hearings
Practice your oral argument, prepare exhibits, and arrive early. Dress professionally and address the judge as "Your Honor."
